House Concerts |
House Concerts are held on a more informal basis than our FridayFolk shows
(
depending on who's coming through town, and whose living room happens to be available).
Please note that these are events in private homes -- we're listing these shows as a courtesy to our members, but the hosts are in charge.
*** Please contact the individual hosts listed below for full details, and to book a seat. ***
PLEASE DO NOT JUST SHOW UP AT SOMEBODY'S HOUSE WITHOUT LETTING THEM KNOW YOU'RE COMING!
Upcoming House Concerts:
September 10: Heather Dale & Ben Deschamps
One of our favourite FridayFolk acts from 2007!
Known for their broad smiles and genuine delight when on stage, Heather Dale and her partner Ben Deschamps play as many as a dozen Celtic and folk instruments in their live performances, ranging from tin whistles to double bass.
Their lively and diverse concerts focus primarily on Heather's original songs, which range from cheeky folk singalongs to soft ballads, with forays into gutsy folk- rock and even story-inspired soundscapes. Heather and Ben throw in the occasional traditional piece approached in an unusual way - whether it's putting a 14th century carol into New Orleans ragtime, or gleefully dramatizing a Scottish border ballad.
Heather began performing in 1997, and since 2004 she and Ben have toured extensively (100+ concerts per year) across North America, the United Kingdom and continental Europe... from Budapest to Winnipeg to San Francisco.
Heather Dale soars... an unabashed and uninhibited romantic who has found her voice and her musical wings. [Toronto Star]

October 24: Eileen McGann
The closest stop on Eileen's CD Release Tour for Light
2002 Juno nominee Eileen McGann is widely acclaimed as one of the best contemporary Canadian songwriters, as well as one of the finest Celtic traditional singers anywhere. Add to this a dynamic performance style, an infectious sense of humour and a singing voice variously described as "magnificent", "stunning" and "hauntingly beautiful", and you have an artist not to be missed.
Her songs paint pictures, tell stories and poke fun at life's absurdities. A strong environmental and social sensibility pervades much of her writing and her choice of traditional material ranges from ancient ballads to rollicking songs of love and adventure.
Eileen has released six solo recordings, all of which have received international five-star reviews. Her 2002 CD “Beyond The Storm” is a stunning collection of songs old and very new, and was nominated for a 2002 Juno Award for “Best Album: Roots & Traditional.”
Soaring vocals, insightful lyrics and a powerful ability to make both her own and traditional songs come alive for audiences: these qualities have made Eileen McGann a mainstay at festivals across Canada, the US and Great Britain for almost two decades. Her live performances have been featured on national radio programs in Britain, Canada and the U.S., including CBC's "Morningside" and "Gabereau", NPR's "Mountain Stage", and "River City Folk"; a BBC Radio International broadcast from the mainstage of the prestigious Cambridge Festival, and a BBC2 National broadcast from the Sidmouth International Festival. She has played the major folk festivals across Canada and Great Britain as well as Philadelphia and other U.S. Festivals.

POSTPONED (probably April 25, TBA) : John Mann
Spirit of the West's frontman returns to his alt-folk roots as a solo performer
Mister Mann is the solo project of Spirit of the West’s front man and songwriter John Mann. After 11 albums and countless tours of the UK, Europe and North America with SotW, his new solo CD December Looms is a return to Mann’s stripped down Alt Folk roots.
Mann pens beautiful melodies with emotionally honest lyrics that capture the intimate moments of his hometown of Vancouver, its occupants, the fragile details of their dysfunctional love and the loss of a city’s innocence. If Damien Rice was Jeff Tweedy and Jeff Tweedy was Josh Ritter, you’d come away with something kindred to December Looms.
John Mann is also an actor of stage, film and television and currently can be seen on the CBC TV drama Intelligence, as CSIS Director, James Mallaby.Mann has stripped everything right down to bare bones, boiling his musical sensibility down to the concentrated strumming of a single acoustic guitar behind his acerbic lyrics and warmly familiar vocals. ...gripping ...heart-rending lyrical skill [Exclaim!]
