September 25: Amy Campbell

Amy Campbell

2008 winner of the Ontario Independent Music Awards' "Best Folk" award

Exalted by one reviewer as “well-poised to one day inherit Joni Mitchell’s place as Canada’s quintessential female singer/songwriter,” Amy joins classical training and folk sensibilities to create music that reaches into human experience and comes back with stories written from the soul – at once infinitely personal and instantly relatable.

Devoted equally to lyrical craft, innovative musicianship, and engaging performances, Amy’s dozen years of writing, composing and touring have cemented her position in hearts and playlists across the world.

Campbell’s voice is warm and inviting, her guitar-playing deft and her lyrics emotionally naked [NOW Magazine]

October 30: Don Bray

Orillia's own award-winning singer-songwriter

Due to illness, the originally-scheduled NEeMA is unable to perform -- Don has graciously stepped in

Noted for his brilliant guitar playing and impassioned songs ranging from the heartfelt to the humorous, Don Bray takes us on a journey through his vivid imagination, with "well-defined characters up there with Willie P." [David Bradstreet], enthusiasm for all aspects of life, and love for those he meets on his journey.

Don’s rootsy, blues- and gospel-tinged style began developing during his childhood in Kentucky, where he was immersed in the passionate swells of the music his father, Colin Bray, sang regularly for Billy Graham. Later influences on both his playing and writing included James Taylor, Bruce Cockburn and Leo Kottke. As a recently-retired Captain, those qualities that made Don a great firefighter likely also influence his songwriting the most: “themes and lyrics that cut right into the soul of the working-class – plucked from his lifetime of living from his heart, the heart of an honest, vulnerable man” [Jim Marino, Freewheeling Folk Show, CFMU].

A keen observer of the human condition, with sensitivity and wit. A brilliant songwriter... poetry married to an unsurpassed guitar style... lyrics clear as water. [David Francey]

Laura Bird

Taking you to the water's edge with lustrous voice

Since the release of her debut CD Dreamwalker, Laura has continued to write, perform and record her music while being an active contributor to her larger musical community, most notably through the OCFF and ArtsCan Circle. Her new CD The Water In Between was declared "a delight in every way" by the Guelph Mercury.

With her finely honed guitar work, a painter's eye for lush images and her sultry, smokey voice, you'll want to close your eyes and watch the mind movies inspired by Laura's soundtrack.

January 29: Katherine Wheatley

Turning everyday pebbles into mountains of song

Thunder Bay’s Chronicle Journal recently wrote: “Katherine Wheatley gave an absolutely transcendent concert. She is able to take minor observations in life and find their soul. On stage… she exudes sheer kindness and love. Blessedly, refreshingly, Katherine Wheatley is a truly Canadian original.” And Edmonton’s SEE Magazine added “man, can this serene red head ever play guitar!”

With offhand wit, vibrant lyrics and an infectious passion for performing, Katherine has been captivating audiences everywhere she performs.

This is a performer to keep you on the edge of your seat. [Ottawa Citizen]
